Four Days from Ouarzazate to the Dunes of Merzouga

Ouarzazate already feels close to the desert, but the real Sahara still lies several landscapes away. Between the city and Merzouga come old earthen villages, rose country, deep gorges, palm valleys and finally the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

This 4 days from Ouarzazate to Merzouga desert tour gives each of those landscapes enough space instead of treating the road south as a simple transfer.

The first day begins with one of southern Morocco’s most recognizable places: Ait Ben Haddou. Often searched online as the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, it is more accurately a historic fortified ksar built in traditional earthen architecture.

From there, the road continues through the landscapes around Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Valley of Roses before reaching the Dades Valley for the first night.

Day 2 moves deeper into southeastern Morocco. A walk through Todra Gorge breaks up the journey before the road opens toward Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes.

By late afternoon, the vehicle stays behind and a Morocco camel ride carries you into the dunes. When the weather and timing allow, sunset is enjoyed from the sand before continuing toward the desert camp.

The third day is deliberately different. Instead of leaving Merzouga immediately after breakfast, you have time to explore the region by 4x4, visit Khamlia when possible, hear Gnawa music and see quieter desert landscapes beyond the usual roadside views.

The final morning leaves the Sahara behind for the long journey west. The route returns toward Ouarzazate and then crosses the High Atlas before finishing in Marrakech.

Among the different desert tours from Ouarzazate, this four-day route works particularly well for travelers who want both a night in the Sahara and enough time to understand the landscape around Merzouga instead of simply arriving, sleeping and leaving again.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. The first day stays close to the architecture and valleys that define southern Morocco. Within a short distance of Ouarzazate, modern roads give way to centuries-old earthen settlements and broad mountain scenery.

Morning — Ouarzazate to Ait Ben Haddou

Pickup takes place from your hotel, riad, airport or another agreed location in Ouarzazate.

The first major stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified ksar and one of the best-known examples of traditional earthen architecture in Morocco.

Rather than limiting the stop to photographs from the road, there is time to approach the settlement and walk through part of its lanes.

The site is widely associated with international film productions, but its older story is connected with pre-Saharan architecture and former caravan routes.

Afternoon — Skoura, Valley of Roses and Dades

After lunch, continue through the landscapes around Ouarzazate toward Skoura and the Valley of Roses.

The appearance of the valley changes throughout the year, with rose cultivation particularly visible during the flowering season.

By late afternoon, reach the Dades Valley, where dramatic rock formations and traditional villages mark the end of the first day.

Dinner and overnight in a hotel or riad in the Dades area.

The moments that define this journey

The main advantage of this itinerary is time. Many desert tours from Ouarzazate focus almost entirely on reaching Merzouga and returning as quickly as possible.

Four days allows the route to breathe. The first day is dedicated to Ait Ben Haddou, the valleys around Skoura and Dades; the second brings you through Todra and into the Sahara.

Merzouga then receives an entire additional day. That means the desert experience is not limited to a camel ride and one night at camp. You also have time for Khamlia, desert tracks and the landscapes around Erg Chebbi.

The itinerary is also practical for travelers whose trip starts in Ouarzazate but continues toward Marrakech, because the final day finishes there rather than returning to the original departure point.
