4 Days from Marrakech to Fes Through the Sahara

This 4 days tour from Marrakech to Fes is designed for travelers who want to connect two of Morocco’s most important cities while giving the Sahara more than just one evening. Instead of reaching Merzouga and leaving again the following morning, this route includes a full additional day around Erg Chebbi.

The journey begins in Marrakech and climbs into the High Atlas Mountains before continuing toward Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the dramatic landscapes of the Dades Valley. The first night is spent in Dades, breaking the journey into a more comfortable rhythm.

On the second day, travel through Tinghir and Todra Gorge before the scenery becomes increasingly dry on the road to Merzouga. By late afternoon, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise above the desert plain.

Here you leave the vehicle behind and begin a Morocco camel ride across the dunes. When daylight and weather cooperate, there is time to stop on the sand for sunset before continuing toward your desert camp for dinner and the night.

What makes this Marrakech to Fes desert tour different is Day 3. Rather than immediately starting the long drive north, you spend a full day exploring the region around Merzouga by 4x4. The route can include Khamlia, desert landscapes around Mefis, seasonal lake areas and encounters with nomadic families when appropriate and available.

The extra day also gives you time to slow down. After exploring the desert, you can relax at a riad near the dunes, walk outside in the late afternoon or choose another night at the desert camp depending on the package booked.

On Day 4, the scenery changes completely once again. Leaving the Sahara behind, the road follows the palm-filled Ziz Valley, climbs toward the Middle Atlas and continues through Ifrane before reaching Fes.

Among Marrakech to Fes desert tours, this four-day itinerary is especially suitable for travelers who want more time in Merzouga without adding a long multi-day circuit to their Morocco itinerary.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. Your 4 days tour from Marrakech to Fes begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel, riad or an agreed accessible point in Marrakech.

Morning — Crossing the High Atlas

Leaving Marrakech behind, the road begins climbing into the High Atlas Mountains. The journey follows the mountain route through changing valleys, small Amazigh villages and panoramic landscapes.

When traffic, weather and road conditions allow, there will be short stops at viewpoints where you can step outside, take photographs and enjoy the mountain scenery.

    Midday — Ait Ben Haddou

After crossing the mountains, continue toward Ait Ben Haddou. Rather than simply viewing the settlement from the road, you will have time to approach the historic ksar and walk through its earthen lanes.

Lunch can be taken in the Ait Ben Haddou area before continuing toward Ouarzazate.

Afternoon — Ouarzazate and Valley of Roses

Continue through Ouarzazate, a city strongly connected with Morocco’s film industry. An optional studio visit can be arranged depending on opening hours and your interests.

The route then continues through Skoura and the Valley of Roses toward Boumalne Dades.

Before reaching your accommodation, timing permitting, stop at panoramic viewpoints and around some of the unusual rock formations commonly known as the Monkey Fingers.

Dinner and overnight in the Dades Valley.

    Driving distance: approximately 353 km
Driving time: approximately 6 hr 30 min, excluding longer visits.

The moments that define this journey

The biggest difference between this itinerary and a shorter Marrakech to Fes desert tour is what happens after your night in the Sahara. Instead of waking up and immediately beginning the long drive to Fes, you have an entire additional day to experience Merzouga.

That extra day changes the pace of the journey. You can explore the landscapes around Erg Chebbi by 4x4, visit Khamlia, travel through remote desert areas and learn more about life around the Sahara before spending another night in the region.

The route is also remarkably varied. In four days, you travel from the High Atlas Mountains to Ait Ben Haddou, Dades, Todra Gorge and the open dunes of Erg Chebbi before crossing the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas on the way to Fes.

Your time in Merzouga includes more than a quick photograph beside the dunes. A Morocco camel ride, sunset when conditions allow, a night at camp and a complete desert exploration day give you time to experience different sides of the Sahara.

This itinerary also works naturally for travelers whose Morocco journey starts in Marrakech and continues to Fes. There is no need to return to Marrakech after visiting Merzouga.
