2 Days from Fes to Marrakech Through the Merzouga Desert

This Fes to Marrakech desert tour turns the journey between two of Morocco’s best-known cities into a short adventure through mountains, palm-filled valleys and the Sahara.

Instead of taking the direct road to Marrakech, you travel south from Fes through Ifrane and the Middle Atlas before following the dramatic Ziz Valley toward Merzouga. In a single day, the landscape changes from cedar forests and mountain towns to dry plateaus, palm groves and finally the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

By late afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga and leave the road behind. Meet the camel team and begin a Morocco camel ride across the dunes. When the weather and arrival time allow, you can stop on the sand and watch the sunset before continuing toward your desert camp.

The night is spent near the dunes in a private tent. Depending on the option booked, you can choose a comfortable camp or upgrade to a luxury desert camp. Dinner is served in the Sahara, followed by time to enjoy the desert atmosphere after dark.

The second day starts early with the possibility of seeing sunrise over Erg Chebbi. After breakfast, you leave Merzouga and begin the long journey toward Marrakech through southern Morocco.

The route passes through desert landscapes and the Ouarzazate region before reaching Ait Ben Haddou. From there, you cross the High Atlas Mountains and continue toward Marrakech.

This 2 day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech is best suited to travelers with limited time who still want to experience Merzouga while moving between the two cities. It is an intensive route, especially on the second day, but the reward is a journey through some of Morocco’s most varied landscapes.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. Your Fes to Marrakech desert tour begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel, riad or an agreed accessible meeting point in Fes.

Morning — Fes to Ifrane and the Middle Atlas

Leave Fes behind and travel south toward Ifrane. The mountain setting, tree-lined streets and cooler climate offer a very different atmosphere from the historic medina you have just left.

After a short stop, continue into the cedar landscapes of the Middle Atlas.

Barbary macaques may sometimes be seen in the forested areas around Azrou. As they are wild animals, sightings are not guaranteed, and we recommend observing them without feeding or disturbing them.

Midday — Across the Middle Atlas

The road continues toward Midelt through open mountain scenery and small towns. A lunch stop can be made along the way before the journey continues south.

After Midelt, the landscape begins to change noticeably. Mountain forests gradually give way to rocky plateaus and drier valleys as you approach southeastern Morocco.

    Afternoon — Ziz Valley

One of the most impressive parts of the journey is the Ziz Valley. Long palm groves cut through the dry landscape, with traditional villages and cultivated land following the river below.

When timing allows, stop at a panoramic viewpoint to enjoy the contrast between the green oasis and the surrounding mountains.

Continue through Erfoud and toward Merzouga.

Late Afternoon — Arrival at Erg Chebbi

By late afternoon, the large Erg Chebbi dunes begin to rise from the desert plain.

After spending much of the day on the road, the pace now changes completely.

Prepare a small overnight bag, meet the camel team and leave the vehicle behind.

Sunset — Camel Ride Across the Dunes

Begin your Morocco camel ride into Erg Chebbi. The caravan moves slowly away from Merzouga and deeper into the dunes.

When daylight and weather conditions allow, there is time to stop on the sand and watch the colors of the desert change around sunset.

Continue toward the camp as evening begins.

    Night — Merzouga Desert Camp

Arrive at the camp and settle into your private tent. Depending on the package selected, you can stay in a comfortable camp or upgrade to a luxury desert camp in Merzouga.

Dinner is served at camp. When organized by the camp team, the evening may continue with traditional drums and music around the fire.

Afterwards, take some time away from the camp lights and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the Sahara beneath the night sky.

    Driving distance: approximately 500 km
Driving time: approximately 7 hr 30 min, excluding lunch and longer stops.

The moments that define this journey

This Fes to Marrakech desert tour is designed for travelers who want to move between the two cities while experiencing Merzouga instead of taking a direct transfer.

In just two days, the scenery changes dramatically. You begin among the forests and mountains near Ifrane, travel through the palm-filled Ziz Valley and finish the first day among the dunes of Erg Chebbi.

The desert experience is more than a roadside stop. You leave the vehicle behind for a Morocco camel ride, travel into the dunes, enjoy sunset when conditions allow and spend the night at a desert camp.

For travelers looking for extra comfort, a luxury desert camp can be arranged depending on availability and the package selected.

The second day provides another complete change of scenery. You leave the Sahara, travel across southern Morocco and pass Ait Ben Haddou before crossing the High Atlas Mountains toward Marrakech.

It is important to understand the rhythm of this tour. The route covers a lot of distance in only two days, especially between Merzouga and Marrakech. This makes it ideal if your priority is reaching the Sahara with limited time, but a 3-day itinerary is a better choice if you prefer a slower journey with longer visits.
