2 Days from Marrakech to Zagora and the Draa Valley

This 2 days desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora is designed for travelers who have limited time but still want to leave Marrakech behind and experience the landscapes of southern Morocco.

The journey begins by crossing the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n’Tichka route. Mountain villages, winding roads and broad valley views accompany the drive before you reach Ait Ben Haddou, one of the most recognizable historic settlements in southern Morocco.

From there, continue through Ouarzazate and toward the Draa Valley. Long palm groves, old earthen villages and kasbahs line the valley as the landscape gradually becomes drier on the approach to Zagora.

By late afternoon, you reach the desert area near Zagora. Here the road journey gives way to a slower experience as you meet the camel team and begin a camel ride through the desert landscape. When weather and timing allow, there is time to enjoy the changing evening light before continuing to camp.

Your night is spent at a Zagora desert camp, with dinner and time to enjoy the quiet atmosphere of southern Morocco after dark. Depending on the camp, the evening may also include traditional Amazigh music around the fire.

The following morning begins with the possibility of watching sunrise before breakfast. You then start the return journey through the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate, crossing the High Atlas again before arriving in Marrakech.

Unlike a Merzouga tour, this route does not reach the giant dunes of Erg Chebbi. Its advantage is different: Zagora is closer to Marrakech, making this Morocco desert tour a practical choice when you only have two days available.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. Your 2 days tour from Marrakech to Zagora desert begins in the morning with pickup from your hotel, riad or an agreed accessible meeting point in Marrakech.

Morning — Crossing the High Atlas Mountains

Leave Marrakech behind and begin the climb into the High Atlas Mountains. The road follows the Tizi n’Tichka route, passing mountain villages, deep valleys and changing scenery as you travel toward southern Morocco.

When traffic and weather allow, short stops can be made at panoramic viewpoints for photographs and a chance to enjoy the mountain landscape.

Late Morning — Ait Ben Haddou

Continue toward Ait Ben Haddou. You will have time to approach the historic ksar and walk through its traditional earthen lanes before continuing the journey.

Lunch can be taken in the surrounding area before departure toward Ouarzazate.

Afternoon — Ouarzazate and the Draa Valley

Pass through Ouarzazate and continue south toward the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley.

This section of the journey is especially scenic. Palm groves, traditional villages and old kasbahs stretch along the valley while the surrounding landscape becomes progressively more arid.

Late Afternoon — Arrival in Zagora

By late afternoon, arrive in the desert region around Zagora and meet the camel team.

Begin a camel ride in Zagora as the light begins to soften. This landscape is different from the large dune fields of Merzouga, but it offers a peaceful introduction to Morocco’s southern desert environment.

When conditions allow, stop to enjoy the sunset before continuing toward the desert camp.

    Evening — Zagora Desert Camp

Arrive at your Zagora desert camp, settle into your tent and enjoy dinner.

Depending on the camp program, the evening may include traditional Amazigh music around the fire. Afterwards, there is time to relax outside and enjoy the desert atmosphere beneath the night sky.

    Approximate distance: 350 km
Approximate driving time: 6–7 hours, excluding visits, lunch and longer stops.

The moments that define this journey

The main advantage of this 2 day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora is the amount of southern Morocco you can experience in a very short itinerary.

In two days, the route moves from Marrakech into the High Atlas Mountains, through Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, along the palm-filled Draa Valley and finally into the desert landscapes around Zagora.

The overnight experience is an important part of the journey. Instead of simply reaching Zagora and returning immediately, you have time for a camel ride, sunset when conditions allow, dinner and a night at a Zagora desert camp.

This itinerary is particularly suitable if you only have two days available. Zagora is considerably more practical for a short trip from Marrakech than traveling all the way to Merzouga.

It is also important to choose between the two destinations for the right reason. Zagora offers a shorter journey and desert atmosphere, while Merzouga is the better choice if your priority is seeing the large dunes of Erg Chebbi.

If you want the larger Sahara dunes and can add another day, compare this trip with our 3 Days Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga.
