6 Days from Tangier to Marrakech Through Northern Morocco and the Sahara

The Mediterranean character of Tangier lasts only for the beginning of this route. Within a few hours, the scenery changes to the green slopes of the Rif, the blue streets of Chefchaouen and, later, the historic cities of northern Morocco.

This 6 days tour from Tangier to Marrakech is built around those contrasts. Rather than rushing directly south, the itinerary gives Chefchaouen, Volubilis and Fes their own place before the road begins to open toward the Sahara.

Fes receives an entire guided day. Its medina, traditional workshops, madrasas, markets and historic quarters are explored with a local guide instead of being reduced to a quick overnight stop.

The atmosphere changes again after Fes. Cedar forests and the cooler landscapes of the Middle Atlas gradually disappear, the Ziz Valley introduces long palm groves, and eventually the golden Erg Chebbi dunes rise beside Merzouga.

Here, the pace slows. A Morocco camel ride leads across part of Erg Chebbi toward the desert camp, with a sunset stop when weather and arrival time allow.

Travelers seeking a more refined Sahara stay can request an upgraded luxury desert camp in Merzouga with a private tent and a higher accommodation category.

The final two days replace sand with canyon walls, oasis landscapes and traditional earthen architecture. Rissani, Todra Gorge and the Dades Valley lead naturally toward Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou.

The High Atlas Mountains form the final transition before Marrakech, completing a varied 6 days in Morocco itinerary that moves continuously from Tangier to the south without repeating the same roads.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. Sea air, busy streets and the port atmosphere of Tangier gradually fade as the road turns inland toward the Rif Mountains.

Pickup can be arranged from Tangier airport, the port, your hotel or another agreed accessible location in the city.

The first stretch moves through northern Morocco toward Chefchaouen, with the landscape becoming greener and more mountainous along the way.

By the time the blue-painted town appears beneath the Rif peaks, Tangier feels like a very different setting.

After check-in at your riad or hotel, keep the remainder of the day flexible.

Walk through the blue lanes, spend time around Outa El Hammam, browse small workshops or move away from the busiest streets toward quieter residential corners.

Chefchaouen is best appreciated without forcing too many scheduled visits into the afternoon. The mountain setting, stairs, small squares and changing shades of blue are part of the experience.

    Overnight in Chefchaouen.

The moments that define this journey

This itinerary is built as a private journey from Tangier to Marrakech, with a dedicated vehicle, professional driver and a pace that belongs to your party rather than a shared group.

Six days also changes what can be included compared with shorter Tangier desert tours. Chefchaouen receives a proper overnight stay, Volubilis and Meknes fit naturally into the route, and Fes has an entire guided day before the Sahara stage begins.

The approach to Merzouga is part of the experience itself. Cedar forests, mountain towns, dry plateaus and the Ziz palm valley gradually give way to the Erg Chebbi dunes instead of reaching the desert through a simple transfer.

At Merzouga, a private camel ride leads toward the camp, with sunset on the dunes when conditions allow and a private tent waiting beyond the road.

For a more refined Sahara stay, an upgraded luxury desert camp can be selected according to availability and the level of accommodation you prefer.

The journey does not lose momentum after Merzouga. Todra, the Dades Valley, Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou create a completely different final chapter before the High Atlas leads into Marrakech.

Pickup can be arranged from Tangier airport, port or your accommodation, while final drop-off is organized directly in Marrakech for a smoother door-to-door journey.
