Fes Desert Tours 4 Days – Merzouga Sahara & Todra Gorge

Four days from Fes bring together the Middle Atlas, Merzouga, Erg Chebbi and Todra Gorge in one private desert route. Spend time around the Sahara, ride camels across the dunes, listen to Gnawa music and sleep in a desert camp before returning to Fes.

Four Days from Fes into the Sahara and Back

Fes feels very far away once the cedar forests disappear behind the road and the first dry landscapes of southeastern Morocco begin to open ahead. By the following evening, the scenery has changed again: there are no mountains in front of you, only the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.

That contrast shapes our Fes desert tours 4 days. The itinerary gives you enough time to reach Merzouga without treating the Morocco Sahara Desert as a single sunset stop, while still adding Todra Gorge before the road turns north toward Fes.

Day 1 crosses Ifrane, the Middle Atlas and the Ziz region before reaching Merzouga. Instead of immediately rushing into the dunes, the first night is spent close to Erg Chebbi, giving you time to settle into the desert environment.

The second day stays around Merzouga. Desert tracks, Khamlia and Gnawa music reveal another side of the region, while a respectful visit with a local Amazigh or Berber nomadic family may also be possible when circumstances allow.

Later in the afternoon, the road disappears behind you. A Morocco camel ride takes you across part of Erg Chebbi toward the camp, with time for sunset when weather conditions cooperate.

The night is spent among the dunes. Depending on the package selected, accommodation can be arranged in a comfortable camp or an upgraded luxury desert camp with a private tent.

On Day 3, the landscape changes once more. Rissani and Erfoud lead toward Tinghir and the towering walls of Todra Gorge, where there is time to walk beside the river before spending the night in the area.

The fourth morning leaves the canyon behind and returns through the changing landscapes of central Morocco toward the Middle Atlas and Fes.

For travelers planning a 4 days in Morocco itinerary from Fes, this route works particularly well when the Sahara is the priority but you also want to see more of southern Morocco than Merzouga alone.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. The first hours outside Fes already begin to change the character of the trip. Busy streets disappear, the air becomes cooler and the road climbs into the landscapes of the Middle Atlas.

Morning — Ifrane and Cedar Country

Pass through Ifrane before continuing toward the cedar areas around Azrou.

Barbary macaques can sometimes be seen here. Because they are wild animals, their presence is never guaranteed, and they should be observed without feeding or disturbing them.

Continue south through mountain scenery toward Midelt, where there is normally time for lunch.

Afternoon — Ziz Valley and Southeastern Morocco

Beyond Midelt, forests gradually give way to rocky plateaus and drier valleys.

The Ziz Valley creates one of the strongest contrasts along the route, with long palm groves running through an otherwise arid landscape.

When timing permits, stop at a panoramic viewpoint before continuing through the Tafilalet region toward Merzouga.

Evening — First Night Beside Erg Chebbi

The dunes of Erg Chebbi gradually appear on the horizon as you approach Merzouga.

Tonight there is no need to immediately cross the dunes after a long driving day. Check into your riad or hotel near the desert, enjoy dinner and rest with the Sahara only a short distance away.

    Driving distance: approximately 500–550 km
Driving time: approximately 7–8 hours, excluding lunch and longer stops.

The moments that define this journey

Four days gives this route a different rhythm from the shorter Fes desert tours. Instead of reaching Merzouga, sleeping and immediately beginning the return journey, you have a complete day around Erg Chebbi.

That additional time makes room for Khamlia, Gnawa music, desert tracks and possible encounters with nomadic communities before the afternoon camel ride.

The Morocco camel ride becomes the natural end to a day spent around the Sahara rather than something fitted between two long driving sections.

The route also continues beyond Merzouga. Todra Gorge adds another landscape to the itinerary before the final drive back to Fes, making this a more varied option for anyone considering 4 days in Morocco.
