This 4 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga gives you more time to experience southern Morocco without turning the journey into a race to the Sahara and back. Over four days, the route crosses the High Atlas Mountains, Dades Valley and Todra Gorge before reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi.
The first morning begins with one of the most scenic drives in Morocco. Leaving Marrakech behind, the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains and follows the bends of the Tizi n’Tichka route. Mountain villages, deep valleys and changing landscapes make the drive an important part of the experience rather than simply a transfer.
Instead of driving directly to Merzouga, the first night is spent in the Dades region. This gives you time to travel through Skoura, the Valley of Roses and the rocky landscapes of southern Morocco before settling in for the evening.
The second day brings you through Tinghir and Todra Gorge. After walking beneath the high canyon walls, the road continues toward Merzouga, where the Erg Chebbi dunes finally appear beyond the desert plain.
Here, the pace changes completely. Leave the vehicle behind and begin a camel ride across Erg Chebbi. When weather and daylight allow, there is time to stop among the dunes and watch the changing colors of the Sahara before continuing toward camp.
The night in the desert is more than simply a place to sleep. You can walk on the dunes, try sandboarding when available, enjoy dinner at camp and spend time outside after dark. Once the activity settles down, the silence of the Sahara creates a completely different atmosphere from Marrakech.
On the third day, the journey continues through Khamlia, Rissani and the Draa Valley before reaching Ouarzazate. Spending the third night there means you do not have to make the entire Merzouga-to-Marrakech journey in one exhausting day.
The final day includes Ait Ben Haddou, the Ounila Valley and Telouet before crossing the High Atlas once again. Among the different Marrakech desert tours, four days offers a good balance between the Sahara experience, cultural stops and time on the road.
The moments that define this journey
Four days changes the rhythm of a Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour. Instead of reaching the Sahara and immediately facing another very long return journey, you spend the third night in Ouarzazate and return through a different part of southern Morocco.
That extra day gives the route more breathing room. Khamlia, Rissani, the Draa Valley and Ouarzazate can be included without taking time away from the main desert experience at Erg Chebbi.
The scenery also keeps changing throughout the journey. You begin among the roads and villages of the High Atlas, continue through Skoura and the rocky landscapes of Dades and Todra, then arrive at the open dunes of Erg Chebbi.
The Sahara is not treated as a quick photo stop. You have time for a camel ride across the dunes, sunset when conditions allow, dinner at the camp, an overnight stay and the possibility of watching sunrise the following morning.
The return route brings another change of scenery through the palm groves of the Draa Valley, Ouarzazate and the historic landscapes around Ait Ben Haddou.
The final day also gives you more time to experience Ait Ben Haddou rather than simply viewing it from the road. Combined with the Ounila Valley, Telouet and the final High Atlas crossing, the journey back to Marrakech remains part of the experience.
