Three Days from Ouarzazate to Fes Through the Sahara

Ouarzazate and Fes sit on very different sides of Morocco. Between them lie old earthen villages, dramatic valleys, narrow gorges, the dunes of Merzouga and the mountain landscapes of the Middle Atlas.

This 3 days desert tour from Ouarzazate to Fes turns the journey between the two cities into a route through some of southern Morocco’s most contrasting scenery.

The first day is shaped by architecture and valleys. From Ouarzazate, the road reaches Ait Ben Haddou, often searched as the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, before continuing through Skoura, the Valley of Roses and the Dades Valley.

Day 2 changes the landscape again. After walking through Todra Gorge, the journey continues toward the Sahara until the golden Erg Chebbi dunes appear outside Merzouga.

Here, the vehicle stays behind and your Morocco camel ride begins. When daylight and weather allow, there is time to enjoy sunset from the dunes before continuing to the desert camp.

Depending on the option booked, the night can be arranged in a comfortable camp or an upgraded luxury desert camp in Merzouga.

The final day leaves the Sahara behind and turns north through the Ziz Valley, Midelt and the Middle Atlas. By evening, the desert landscapes have disappeared and the tour finishes in Fes.

For travelers moving from southern Morocco toward northern Morocco, this Ouarzazate to Fes desert tour is much more interesting than taking a direct transfer because Merzouga becomes part of the journey rather than a separate side trip.

Day by day

Your itinerary

  1. The first morning stays within the landscapes that made southern Morocco famous: earthen villages, palm groves and long valleys framed by dry mountains.

Morning — Ouarzazate to Ait Ben Haddou

Pickup is arranged from your hotel, riad, airport or another agreed location in Ouarzazate.

The first important stop is Ait Ben Haddou, a historic fortified ksar built with traditional earthen architecture.

Instead of limiting the visit to a roadside photograph, there is time to approach the settlement and walk through part of its old lanes.

Its international film reputation is well known, but its architectural heritage and former role along caravan routes are what give the site its real importance.

Afternoon — Skoura, Roses and Dades

After lunch, continue toward Skoura and the Valley of Roses.

The scenery gradually changes as the road approaches the Dades Valley in Morocco, where rock formations and traditional villages line the route.

Arrive in the Dades area in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight in a hotel or riad.

The moments that define this journey

This route solves two needs at the same time: reaching Fes from southern Morocco and experiencing Merzouga without adding a separate desert trip.

The first two days contain very different landscapes. Ait Ben Haddou, Dades and Todra gradually lead you deeper into the south before the road finally reaches the Merzouga Desert.

The Morocco camel ride and camp night give the Sahara its own place in the itinerary rather than reducing Erg Chebbi to a quick photography stop.

The final day then becomes another complete change of scenery, moving from sand dunes through the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas before finishing in Fes.

If you would like to add a full day around Merzouga for Khamlia, Gnawa music or additional desert activities, a four-day itinerary is more suitable. You can arrange that through our Customize Your Morocco Tour page.
