Scenic drive through the High Atlas foothills
The city fades surprisingly quickly once you leave Marrakech. Busy streets give way to open countryside, then to the first folds of the High Atlas Mountains, where the road begins to follow valleys, villages and stretches of river. This Ourika Valley day trip from Marrakech is built around that gradual change of scenery rather than a single attraction.
Pickup takes place in the morning from your hotel, riad or the nearest point accessible by vehicle. The drive heads south towards the Atlas foothills, passing through rural areas where red-earth slopes, terraced fields and traditional houses begin to replace the urban landscape.
Along the way, there is time for selected stops depending on the pace of the day. These may include a visit to an Amazigh village and a women’s argan oil cooperative, where you can see how local products are prepared. The visit is intended as a cultural stop, not a compulsory shopping experience.
As the route continues deeper into Ourika Valley, the river becomes the central feature of the landscape. Cafés and small restaurants line parts of the water, while mountains rise sharply on either side. Free time allows you to slow down, enjoy the surroundings and take a break before lunch.
Later, the road reaches Setti Fatma, one of the best-known villages in the valley. From here, travellers who want a more active afternoon can arrange a local mountain guide for a walk towards the waterfalls. Those who prefer a quieter day can remain near the river, relax at a café or continue exploring the village area at their own pace.
The return to Marrakech begins in the late afternoon. Because Ourika Valley is relatively close to Marrakech, this excursion offers a very different landscape without requiring the long road hours of destinations such as Ait Ben Haddou or the desert regions.
